We are delighted that Brentwood Bean Library has received recognition for the beautiful design and construction of its masonry.
Judges in the Brick Awards summarised the project as having ‘exemplary brickwork’.
Working with Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture we assisted in the design of the brickwork on the project and in particular the structural brick arches.
The Victorians knew how to use brickwork creatively, but contemporary engineers are generally ill-equipped to design arched masonry structures. EngineersHRW achieved this analysis by developing a unique spreadsheet to analyse the line of thrust. The validity of the spreadsheet was checked against known rules of thumb as described in ‘The Minutes of the Proceedings of the ICE’ by Barlow in 1846.
