Secular Retreat Nears Completion

< Return to news

Our latest project for Living Architecture is due for completion on site in November 2018. The project, Swiss Architect Peter Zumthor’s first permanent building in the UK, has been featured in a range of news and architectural publications this month. See links below. The building comprises a holiday house on a hilltop in Devon, including five bedrooms and a large shared living space with expansive views across the landscape. Overlapping reinforced concrete roof slabs are supported on rammed mass concrete walls and columns. The structural concrete elements are exposed on all sides, with layers of insulation incorporated to avoid thermal bridging.

Secular Retreat is the latest in a series of seven innovative houses we have provided structural engineering designs for on behalf of our client Living Architecture. These include the Balancing Barn with Dutch Architects MVRDV, A House for Essex with FAT and Grayson Perry and Life House with Architect John Pawson.
