The new altar is a freestanding structure with a full width window through the vertical panel, by using welded steel pates (which are shaped to suit the cross-sectional profile of the altar) with rigid cross panels above and below the opening a stable structure was created. The potential for overturning being addressed by use of kentledge in the backspan base detail.
