Salerno Law Courts

The Palace of Justice in Salerno, Italy is located on a former goods yard peripheral to the city centre, in an area highlighted for renewal and regeneration as part of Spanish architect Oriol Bohigas' masterplan for the city.  There are five individual blocks which are aligned longitudinally and linked by open terraces and colonnaded courtyards. Each individualised structure is articulated as a simple block between 5 and 14 storeys high and finished in precast concrete panels with terracotta aggregate, the façades being punctured by a series of openings. Earthquake design was a necessity due to local seismic activity.

Structural engineering up to RIBA Stage 3 by Jane Wernick Associates, now part of engineersHRW.
