Watersportbaan Brugge, Ghent
This 90m span bridge was to provide a new cycle and pedestrian link across a rowing lake on the outskirts of Ghent in Belgium, part of a wider landscaping and traffic upgrade to the surrounding area. The winning entry to a competition in 2015, the design is an asymmetrical cable-stayed structure, with the single tower conceived as an irregular, sculptural form in steel. The 7.5m wide deck is a shallow steel box girder with a tapered profile and slender edges to give a blade-like appearance. Tuned mass dampers were incorporated in the design to ensure acceptable response characteristics under pedestrian loading.
