Crafts Council Gallery
The transformation of a 19th century Grade II listed chapel to create a new gallery, library and events space for the Crafts Council. The structural strategy for this project was to strip back the existing finishes and non-loadbearing partitions to open-up spaces within the existing building. In doing so, layers of previous structural interventions within the former chapel were exposed and celebrated in the architectural design of the interior.
Accessibility was improved throughout the building by making subtle level changes, adapting the entrance stair and introducing a new platform lift and front lobby with level access to the gallery. Where required to improve accessibility, new structural openings were formed in the existing walls.
