Boathouse 4, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Constructed in 1939 as part of the WWII rearmament programme, Portsmouth Harbour’s Boathouse 4 with its distinctive sawtooth roof has been refurbished and internally extended with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Working with Walters and Cohen Architects, we provided full structural engineering services. The refurbishment and adaption to public use includes a new wraparound mezzanine level used for exhibition and teaching spaces, ancillary accommodation and a communal café.

It is wonderful to see the building maintain its former use to repair launches and small sailing craft, and work with Highbury College to build the skills of future generations of boat builders and restorers, whilst at the same time being open to the public and providing practical and interesting exhibitions as part of the Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth.

Structural engineering by Jane Wernick Associates, now part of engineersHRW.
